Moore's Law Turns 50 - How Much Longer Can it Last?

Pizza and Networking:  6:30 PM
Presentation:  7:00 PM
Presenter:  Ray Duran, Extron Electronics
Meeting is free and open to the public.  Please register at the link below:
http://www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2015-08-com

Abstract
Our new smartphones, with 2 billion transistors, boosts more computing power than a laptop purchased two years ago, a fact driven by a rule known as Moore's Law, which states that the number of transistors on a chip doubles approximately every two years. Gordon Moore’s prediction of exponential growth has held true since he proposed it in 1965.  The end of Moore's Law seems to have been announced every decade, but the industry found innovative paths to keep the spirit of this law alive. As we mark the 50th anniversary of this prediction, many wonder if the sophisticated manufacturing processes and increasingly esoteric chip materials are to shrink the die size have reach their limit. Can Moore’s Law last much longer?

About the Speaker
Ray Duran, Principal FPGA Design Engineer at Extron Electronics will explore the runway of the Moore’s Law from historical, present and future perspectives with a compelling look into new technologies, business models, and innovations poised to challenge the doomsayers of this golden rule of semiconductor industry.

Ray Duran has 25 years of engineering experience in the field of programmable devices and has become an expert in the design, development and programing of very high speed digital signal processing chips for applications requiring the management of high data throughput and rapid analysis such as video and military based systems with intense computing analysis. Ray graduated with a BSEE degree from the California State University Fresno in 1988. He recently obtained a master' in engineering from UCLA in 2014.

Abstract
Gravity Probe B was a satellite-based mission funded by NASA which launched on 20 April 2004 on a Delta II rocket. The objective was to measure the apparent Coriolis force (Lense-Thirring effect) predicted by Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity. The project followed a proposal by MIT Physicist George Pugh in 1959. Efforts were led by Stanford University physics department with Lockheed Martin as the primary subcontractor. Mission scientists viewed it as the second gravity experiment in space following the Gravity Probe A in 1976. Dr. Francis Everitt speaks to the many groundbreaking technical accomplishments of the project and its results.

About the Speaker
Dr. C. W. Francis Everitt is a US-based English physicist working on experimental testing of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity. Dr. Everitt was educated at Imperial College London and the University of Pennsylvania in low-temperature physics. He is presently Professor at the Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory of Stanford University and is also an Associate Member of the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology. Dr. Everitt was the Principle Investigator for the Gravity Probe B experiment.

New Frontiers in Terahertz Technology

Pizza and Networking:  6:30 PM
Presentation:  7:00 PM
Presenter:  Mona Jarrahi, Ph.D., UCLA
Meeting is free and open to the public.  Please register at the link below:
http://www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2015-09-com

Abstract
Although unique potentials of terahertz waves for chemical identification, material characterization, biological sensing, and medical imaging have been recognized for quite a while, the relatively poor performance, higher costs, and bulky nature of current terahertz systems continue to impede their deployment in field settings. In this talk, I will describe some of our recent results on developing fundamentally new terahertz electronic/optoelectronic components and imaging/spectrometry architectures to mitigate performance limitations of existing terahertz systems. In specific, I will introduce new designs of high-performance photoconductive terahertz sources that utilize plasmonic antennas to offer terahertz radiation at record-high power levels of several milliwatts - demonstrating more than three orders of magnitude increase compared to the state of the art. I will describe that the unique capabilities of these plasmonic antennas can be further extended to develop terahertz detectors and heterodyne spectrometers with single-photon detection sensitivities over a broad terahertz bandwidth at room temperatures, which has not been possible through existing technologies. To achieve this significant performance improvement, plasmonic antennas and device architectures are optimized for operation at telecommunication wavelengths, where very high power, narrow linewidth, wavelength tunable, compact and cost-effective optical sources are commercially available. Therefore, our results pave the way to compact and low-cost terahertz sources, detectors, and spectrometers that could offer numerous opportunities for e.g., medical imaging and diagnostics, atmospheric sensing, pharmaceutical quality control, and security screening systems. And finally, I will briefly highlight our research activities on development of new types of high-performance terahertz passive components (e.g., modulators, tunable filters, and beam deflectors) based on novel reconfigurable meta-films.

Presented by Conejo Valley Optical Society of America

Speaker:  Eric Ford, Eidetic Optical Systems

Abstract
Optical design is changing in our modern world. New types of lens systems have evolved over the last 10 years or so, and they require a new design approach. On the other hand, some types of lens designs have enduring qualities.  In this talk we will look back on an interesting symmetrical zoom lens design found in a 1951 paper by a well-known lens designer of that era, and how it is improved during the design process to approach modern High Definition camera quality. At the other end of the time spectrum, we will also explore the current world of cell phone lens design, and how it differs from classical design methods. What has contributed the most to this difference? Optimization software!  The steps through both these design processes will be shown.
