Get-AI Series: 6 - Enabling Autonomous Operations

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly progressing from systems that generate responses to intelligent agents capable of reasoning, planning, using tools, maintaining context, and executing multi-step tasks. As organizations move toward agentic AI, the opportunity is no longer limited to helping employees find information—it is increasingly about enabling AI systems to participate in and automate real business processes.

Following our August session on Connecting AI to Enterprise Data using Model Context Protocol (MCP), the IEEE Orange County Computer Society GET-AI Series continues in September with a practical, demo-driven exploration of AI Agents and Autonomous Operations.

This double-feature session begins with the foundations of agentic AI—what makes an AI system an agent, how agents reason and plan, how they use tools, memory, and context, and how to build a simple agent capable of completing a multi-step task. The second session builds on those concepts to explore how autonomous and multi-agent systems can orchestrate complex enterprise workflows while maintaining security, governance, observability, human oversight, and operational reliability.

By combining foundational concepts with architecture patterns and live demonstrations, the September session will help attendees understand how organizations can progress from AI assistance to intelligent, governed autonomous operations.


Speakers:

Brij Mohan is an independent researcher specializing in agentic AI, multi-agent system design, and cloud-native data architecture. He brings more than 25 years of engineering and leadership experience across fintech, healthcare, and government systems, including previous experience as a founder and CEO.

His current research focuses on multi-agent architectures for fraud detection, master data management, and entity resolution. Brij is an IEEE Senior Member, ACM Professional Member, a member of the Forbes Technology Council, and serves on the Products That Count Advisory Council.

He also holds the AWS Solutions Architect Professional and AWS Machine Learning Engineer Associate certifications, along with PMP, PMI-ACP, and TOGAF 9 credentials.

Karthik Karunanithi is a Solution Delivery Leader for AI Transformation at IBM, where he designs production-grade agentic AI systems for enterprise and public-sector clients. His work includes multi-agent architectures, Model Context Protocol integrations, and the identity and reliability layers required to operate these systems in regulated environments.

He is a named inventor on two granted U.S. patents in secure access control for patient health information, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a voting member of the IEEE P7999 working group on AI ethics oversight.

Abstract:
CLASTECH 2026 will be held at the Eravant facility in Torrance. The event features four expert speakers presenting on microwave and antenna topics, with a box lunch from Panera Bread provided. Space is limited — no onsite registration.

Speakers:

1. Satish Kumar Sharma, Ph.D. — San Diego State University
Topic: Multifunctional Antennas and Arrays for Wireless Communications

Dr. Sharma is a Full Professor and Director of the Antenna and Microwave Laboratory at SDSU. He received his Ph.D. from IIT Banaras Hindu University in 1997 and joined SDSU in 2006. He is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award (2009) and the IEEE AP-S Harold A. Wheeler Prize Paper Award (2015). He has published over 320 journal and conference papers, holds three US and Canadian patents, and co-authored Multifunctional Antennas and Arrays for Wireless Communication Systems (IEEE-Press/Wiley, 2021). His research spans beam steering antennas, phased arrays, reconfigurable antennas, and metasurface antennas from VHF to 110 GHz.

2. Mahmoud Wagih, Ph.D. — University of Glasgow
Topic: Making Microwaves Green: From Life Cycle Assessments to Chipless Sensing Solutions

Dr. Wagih leads the Green RF-Enabled Electronics Lab at the University of Glasgow. He is an IEEE Distinguished Microwave Lecturer, Founder of RX Watt Ltd., and has published 130+ papers across Nature Portfolio, Advanced, and IEEE Transactions journals. He was named Forbes 30 Under 30 for Science & Healthcare (2024) and received the Royal Academy of Engineering Sir George MacFarlane Medal as UK's Young Engineer of the Year. His talk covers Life Cycle Assessment of microwave hardware, sustainable recycling solutions for RF circuits, and chipless sensing with novel materials.

3. Prof. Nicholas C. Miller — Michigan State University
Topic: Large-Signal Characterization and Modeling of GaN HEMTs to 100 GHz

Dr. Miller is an Assistant Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University and formerly an electronics engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory (2017–2023). His research focuses on linear and nonlinear mm-wave characterization of on-wafer transistors, physics-based compact modeling of compound semiconductors, and TCAD modeling of wide-bandgap semiconductor transistors. He is a recipient of the AFRL Early Career Award (2023).

Volunteers Needed: FIRST Lego League Robotics Tournament

Once again IEEE Buenaventura Section is supporting middle school robotics by sponsoring the annual FIRST Lego League Robotics Tournament. The tournament will be on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at the Ventura County Office of Education Conference Center in Camarillo. Teams of robot enthusiasts age 10 to 14 will compete for a chance to go to the regional tournament. The IEEE has been generous in its support over many years both financially and in providing volunteers. It is a lot of fun and you will be greatly impressed with what these young people accomplish and their enthusiasm.

If you are available to volunteer from 8 AM to 4 PM we can definitely use you in a variety of roles, from assisting with judging, monitoring the games, and other jobs. No robotics experience is needed. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop localization, mapping, SLAM, and state-estimation algorithms
