Perseverance on Mars
5:00 PM PST
Online

Speaker: Kenneth A. Farley
Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-03-mtt

Overview

After eight years of development at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Perseverance rover was successfully launched on its journey to Mars on July 30, 2020. In this Watson Lecture, Farley will describe how this highly capable rover will investigate rocks deposited billions of years ago at the bottom of a large lake (long since disappeared), seeking evidence of possible martian life at that time. He will also look at how the rocks carefully collected by Perseverance during these explorations will provide the cargo for the first-ever effort to bring samples back to Earth from another planet. The riskiest moments of the mission will occur on February 18, 2021, as the spacecraft penetrates the martian atmosphere and deposits Perseverance on the surface.

The ABCs of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)
6:30 PM PDT
Online

Speaker: Bernie Sklar
Meetings are free and open to the public.

Register for Part 2 at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2021-03-com-part2
This is a two-part talk. Make sure to register for both parts.

Overview

The main benefit of OFDM is its ability to cope with severe multipath channel conditions without the need for complex equalization filters.  How does it accomplish this?  The short answer:  by "dividing and conquering."  It partitions a high-data-rate signal into smaller low-data-rate signals so that the data can be sent over many low-rate sub-channels.

The Time/Frequency relationships are presented with a figure that facilitates a straightforward understanding of the OFDM partitioning process.  We emphasize the important role of the cyclic prefix (CP).  We show how it allows us to change linear convolution into circular convolution, thereby purging any transients, which helps to maintain waveform orthogonality at the receiver.

OFDM waveform synthesis is covered in detail.  Also, the spectral properties of Real and Imaginary signals are reviewed.  We further consider the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in OFDM, and how the desire for small PAPR has given rise to a special variant of OFDM called single-carrier OFDM (SC-OFDM).  Finally, we illustrate applications of this elegant technology in standards such as 802.11 and LTE.

Ventura County Science Fair: Volunteers Needed

Ventura County has a long proud tradition of excellence in the Science Fair having competed at state for the past 66 years and winning many and various state titles over the years.

This is only possible by providing our students with the fairest and highest caliber judging available at the county level. That is why they need you!

By signing up to be a judge you are committing to:
•  Reviewing the Judges Guidelines.
•  Reviewing and evaluating your assigned projects prior to the student interviews.
•  Participate on a judging panel to interview and score those students whose projects you reviewed.

If you are interested in being a judge, please create an account on the website and register as a judge. We look forward to working with you to celebrate our students' learning and research.

While logistics and dates remain tentative at this time, we are hoping to follow an event schedule that mirrors the following as much as possible:
•  March 15 - 18, 2021: Judges Virtual Project Review
•  March 19, 2021: Judges Virtual Student Interview

Recent Interesting and Useful Enhancements of Polyphase Filter Banks

On Thursday, 25 February 2021, Prof. Fred Harris gave a talk to the Communications Society Chapter on “Recent Interesting and Useful Enhancements of Polyphase Filter Banks”. He presented a set of severe channelizer specifications and illustrate various channelizer modifications to reduce processing cost while meeting original design specifications. Some of the new variations offer quite substantial reductions in workload by very simple changes in perspective and design options.

Prof. Harris has graciously agreed to let us share the slides and a recording of his talk. Links are on our web site at www.ieee-bv.org/report/2021-02-com .
