Overview

Cryptocurrency and Bitcoin in particular have experienced significant interest among the public and the financial markets in last couple of years.

When it comes to cryptocurrency there is a significant information divide amongst the public. There are few people who have a deep understanding of the topic. They believe in this form of currency and are passionate about what it represents. Then there are rest of us who feel that it is cryptic topic as the name says.

In this lecture I will attempt to bridge the gap between these two communities. I will explain the origins of cryptocurrency and what it will mean to society in general in the near future. I will also present investment opportunities in cryptocurrency.

About the Speaker

Momin Quddus is a senior member of IEEE. He is the current chair of IEEE Buenaventura Section. He has worked in Avionics, Wireless communication and Aerospace industries for over 30 years. He holds a patent on wireless antenna design.

Momin received BSEE degree from University of Texas and MSEE degree from Florida Atlantic University. He is a PE.

He is interested in analyzing topics in terms of economics and analytics.

He enjoys playing tennis, field hockey and soccer. He coaches youth sport teams. He volunteers at youth outreach events such as Science fair & Academic Decathlon. He serves in the advisory board of STEAM programs.

Overview

Automated risk assessment tools allow owners, developers, investors, and lenders to identify properties that are particularly vulnerable to physical risks. This enables resources to be focused on vulnerable sites for further risk assessments or management by tying hazards/risks to individual buildings.

About the Speaker

Albert J. Slap is President and Co-Founder of Coastal Risk Consulting, LLC, a geospatial technology, modeling, data analytics and advisory services firm located in Boca Raton, FL. Coastal Risk’s technology empowers individuals, businesses, and governments in the US and globally to accelerate resilience to floods, natural hazards and climate impacts. Prior to launching Coastal Risk, Mr. Slap was a nationally recognized, environmental trial attorney and law professor. Over the years, Mr. Slap used America’s environmental laws to protect public health and the environment by stopping water and air pollution, toxic waste dumping, and by requiring local governments to replace aging and polluting sewer infrastructure. For his outstanding legal work, Mr. Slap was the recipient in 2014 of the prestigious Marjory Stoneman Douglas Defender of the Everglades Award.

Mentors Needed: IEEE Buenaventura Fall STEM Event for Girls

“Girls Make STEM with Heart”, the IEEE Buenaventura fall STEM event for middle-school girls, will be on Saturday, October 9 at La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks. If you were involved in the 2019 event, you know what a wonderful experience it was for the students, parents, and volunteers. If you were not involved, here is some background:

•  Over 100 students attended eight different workshops covering programming, chemistry, electronics modules, robotics, solar energy, virtual reality, and wearables.
•  We had at least two mentors per workshop. Each student was able to get plenty of attention.
•  Parents attended a separate program that covered topics such as careers in STEM, how the young brain develops, and cybersecurity.
•  At the end of the day, students got to show what they learned to their parents.
•  La Reina graciously let us use their classrooms and cafeteria. Each classroom is equipped with a computer projector, movable tables and chairs, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
•  Lunch and materials are provided by IEEE.
•  See our Facebook page for photos and videos of the 2019 event.

If you are interested in volunteering for this year’s event, please contact us at stem2021@ieee-bv.org

Quantum Computing with Microwaves

On 13 April 2021, Joe Bardin gave a talk to the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society on the topic “Quantum Computing with Microwaves”.

Summary: Quantum computing offers the potential for an exponential speed-up of certain classes of computational problems, and, as such, the development of a practical quantum computer has been a field of intense research over the past two decades. Yet, it is still early in the development of these systems, as we have just reached the point at which laboratory experiments have shown that quantum computers can outperform classical computers at certain computational tasks. As such, it is an exciting time in the field, analogous to the early days of classical computer development. As microwave engineers there is a tremendous opportunity to contribute to the field, since the control and measurement of most quantum processors is carried-out using microwave techniques. In this talk, I will describe the use of microwaves in quantum computing, with a focus on the superconducting qubit technology which was used to show that a quantum computer is capable of post-classical computation. The talk will be geared toward microwave engineers who may have no background in quantum computing, and it will provide a glimpse into the fundamentals, contemporary system architectures, recent experiments, and, finally, major microwave challenges that must be overcome if fault tolerant quantum computing is to become a reality.

Mr. Bardin has graciously agreed to let us share the slides from his talk. Links are on our web site at www.ieee-bv.org/quantum-computing-with-microwaves/
