Description

This talk will examine in detail the new optics landscape for datacom and telecom space. The optics industry is at a crossroad driven by the post pandemic huge BW demand at lower cost/power optics from hyperscale data centers for networking and AL/ML applications. The debate on pluggable vs co-packaged optics (CPO) will likely continue to be hot topics in the next few years.

We will discuss how data center operators view the future path of photonics integration with switch electronics and their preferred technology choices and timelines. This will impact on how to revolutionize today’s pluggable optics industry with regards to applications, profitability, ecosystems, supply chain as well as uncertainties in the technology.

In telecom space, as global operators accelerate the deployment of 5G networks and beyond, promote the differentiated application of 5G multi-services, and release more spectrum resources, the industry is pushing higher bandwidth requirements for high performance fronthaul, midhaul and backhaul optics. Several optical transceiver products are now targeted specifically for this high-volume market.

This presentation will focus on latest advances in optical wireless deployment scenarios (e.g. 50G vs 100G Bidi for up to 40km and leveraging 100G and 400G PAM4 based client optics). We will discuss the synergies and differences between today’s mobile transport and future optical 6G networks.

About the Speaker

Dr. Frank Chang is an expert in photonic IC technologies, optics transceivers, and optical networking. He is currently Source Photonics’ Chief Engineer and CTO for advanced and next-generation transceiver design. Previously he served as a senior Principal Engineer for Optics Interconnect within the CTO Optics Office at Inphi Corporation for over 5 years after over 12 years of service at Vitesse Semiconductors. In addition, he also held various project and management positions with Cisco/Pirelli, and JDS Uniphase, working on the design, development, and commercialization of fiber optics components. Frank recently published the industry first DCI book entitled “Datacenter Connectivity Technologies: Principles and Practice”. He is a frequent conference speaker, co-authored 100 plus regular journal and conference papers, and has served in ECOC and OFC technical committees for several years in a row. Frank was the president and now among the board and advisors at Photonic Society of Chinese-Americans (PSC-SC). He is the Industry Forum & Exhibition (IF&E) Chair for Globecom 2015 in San Diego, Globecom 2019 in Hawaii and now ICC 2024 in Denver with IEEE Communication Society. Frank obtained his Ph.D degree in Optoelectronics from the Ecole Polytechnique, University of Montreal, Canada for his research thesis on ultrafast optical generation of 1550nm tunable solid-state lasers. Besides Frank is senior member of IEEE and OSA Fellow.

Reports on Past Events

∙    FIRST Lego League Qualifying Tournament

The FIRST Lego League Robotics Qualifying Tournament was held on Sunday, November 13, at La Reina High School and Middle School in Thousand Oaks. The event welcomed 110 boys and girls aged 9-14 from 21 teams. FIRST Lego League is a global organization of over 35,000 teams. The Thousand Oaks event was sponsored by IEEE Buenaventura Section, IEEE PACE Committee, and several IEEE Buenaventura chapters. It was the first in-person, full-sized tournament since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic. (video)

∙    IEEE Buenaventura Fall Mixer

On Wednesday, November 16, IEEE Buenaventura Section held its fall mixer. The mixer featured guest speaker Dr. Severine Fornier, who discussed observing sea level from space. (photos)
