Advances in Detect and Avoid for Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Advanced Air Mobility

Description
In the latest years, sense and avoid (SAA), or detect and avoid (DAA), has represented one of the main roadblocks to the integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations. This lecture outlines and reviews architectures, technologies, and algorithms for SAA. First, basic SAA definitions and taxonomies are discussed. Ground-based/airborne and cooperative/non-cooperative architectures are covered. The SAA process is dissected into its fundamental tasks, which are discussed in details. Different sensing algorithms and technologies are presented, including radar and optical systems. Potential and challenges of multi-sensor-based systems and data fusion are pointed out. Techniques for conflict detection, and approaches for remotely operated or autonomous avoidance are introduced. The tutorial analyzes recent trends such as the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and ends with an overview of current perspectives and recent progress relevant to SAA for UAS integration in the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system and in the framework of UAS Traffic Management (UTM) / U-Space and Advanced/Urban Air Mobility. Links with manned aviation are covered too.

Wearable Acoustic and Vibration Sensing and Machine Learning for Human Health and Performance

5:00 PM PDT
online

Speaker: Omer Inan
Register at: events.vtools.ieee.org/m/371675

Description
Recent advances in digital health technologies are enabling biomedical researchers to reframe health optimization and disease treatment in a patient-specific, personalized manner. This talk will focus on my group’s research in two areas of relevance to digital health: (1) cardiogenic vibration sensing and analytics; and (2) musculoskeletal sensing with joint acoustic emissions and bioimpedance. Our group has extensively studied the timings and characteristics of cardiogenic vibration signals such as the ballistocardiogram and seismocardiogram, and applied these signals for cuffless blood pressure measurement, heart failure monitoring, and human performance. We have also leveraged miniature contact microphones to measure the sounds emitted by joints, such as the knees, in the context of movement, and have examined how these acoustic characteristics are altered by musculoskeletal injuries and disorders (e.g., arthritis). We envision that these technologies can all contribute to improving patient care with lower cost and better outcomes.

Call for Nominations/Volunteers: IEEE Buenaventura Section Officers

We need your help! IEEE Buenaventura Section is looking for members who would like to serve on our Section Executive Committee. ExCom members have a chance to engage with other IEEE members and set the direction for our section.

We have openings for the following positions. Each position has an estimated time requirement of 2 to 4 hours per week.
•  Section Vice Chair: Assists the Section Chair with overall management of the section.
•  Section Treasurer: Maintains the section bank account and financial reports.
•  Section Secretary: Records minutes of the section operating committee and maintains a roster of section volunteers.

Officers are expected to maintain an active IEEE membership during their service. A candidate must be of grade Graduate Student Member, Member, Senior Member, or Fellow.

The deadline for nominations, including “self nominations” (volunteering) is Saturday, September 23. The following information is needed:
•  Name of nominee.
•  Position of interest (Vice Chair, Treasurer, or Secretary).
•  Biographical sketch (no more than 150 words).

Please submit your nominations or any questions to nominations2023@ieee-bv.org. Thank you!

Would you like to get involved with encouraging Ventura County students to pursue STEM careers?

If you feel like many of our IEEE members who have expressed interest in encouraging young people to consider STEM career opportunities, but you are not sure how to get involved or you may not want to make time commitments to visiting schools, etc., we have the perfect opportunity for you!  One of our Section leaders has recently moved out of the area – he was serving as our IEEE Buenaventura Section representative on the VC STEM Network.  The VC STEM Network is a collaborative and interdisciplinary community group working to foster the development of tomorrow’s STEM leaders.  We need a volunteer to serve as our representative.  The group meets online for 1 to 2 hour meetings about 4 times per year.  No driving to meetings – it’s all very convenient.  Our former representative is available online to fill you in on the group and answer any questions you may have.  Other members of the VC STEM group are executives in local companies, representatives of VCOE, teachers, education leaders, usually two or more officers from the Naval Base, and representatives from other non-profits in the county.

Together we – leaders from higher education, PreK-12 education, business and industry, national parks, local and state government, the military, and non-profits – are laying down a local infrastructure extending from pre-kindergarten to post graduate studies that will encourage our students to be curious and engaged, and ensure that they are prepared, able and ready to join the STEM workforce and become the STEM leaders of tomorrow.

You can visit their website at www.vcstem.org and read about the activities of the group at www.facebook.com/VCSTEM/.

VC STEM Network’s Vision is that all Ventura County students, from pre-kindergarten through post-graduate studies (P-20) will benefit from high quality STEM learning opportunities and graduate with the STEM knowledge and abilities that will translate into successful careers positively impacting our region, nation, and the world.
Inspire PK-20 students’ interest and pursuance of STEM as an Educational path and future career.
Collaborate to expand networking and resource sharing across sectors (employers, educators, policymakers, funders, and others) to increase capacity to serve Ventura County PK-20 students.
Engage partners in cultivating a broader pool of students who are pursuing STEM-related degrees and careers.
Educate PK-20 educators, leaders, and the community on high-impact STEM learning practices and encourage their adoption in formal and informal settings.

If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please contact newsletter@ieee-bv.org, and we will put you in contact.
