IEEE Buenaventura Section Announces Scholarship Program

The IEEE Buenaventura Section will award two $1000 scholarships in November 2023

Eligibility Requirements

  • The applicant must be currently enrolled in an accredited two or four-year college or university in Ventura County (California).
  • The applicant must be studying towards an engineering or technical degree related to IEEE scope of fields. If the applicant’s college or university does not offer an engineering program, then a course of study preparatory to engineering will be accepted.
  • The applicant must have completed at least one quarter or semester in college and maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better in college level courses.
  • An applicant does not need to have a sponsor to be considered.
  • Complete application (including current transcript) is due no later than Monday, October 16, 2023.

Volunteers Needed: FIRST Lego League Robotics Tournament

Once again IEEE Buenaventura Section is supporting middle school robotics by sponsoring the annual FIRST Lego League Robotics Tournament in Thousand Oaks on Sunday, November 12. Teams of young robot enthusiasts that will compete for a chance to go to the regional tournament. The IEEE has been generous in its support over many years both financially and in providing volunteers. It is a lot of fun and you will be greatly impressed with what these young people accomplish and their enthusiasm.

If you are available to volunteer from 8 AM to 4 PM we can definitely use you in a variety of rolls from assisting judges, monitoring the games, and other jobs.

Planning for the event is already underway. Please E-mail Bob Rumer and Deron Johnson at FLL-2023@ieee-bv.org to volunteer or ask questions. Feel free to pass this on to anyone you think might enjoy volunteering!

FarmBot: Open Source Agricultural Robotics

On September 13, Marc Roland discussed "FarmBot: Open Source Agricultural Robotics" with the IEEE Buenaventura Computer Society Chapter. FarmBot is a US start-up agricultural robotics manufacturer using 100% open-source hardware, software, and data platform to design a Cartesian robot for small to medium-scale automated precision food production for gardening. Digital VLSI Design Verification Engineer – Pasadena, CA

Are you a maker, tinkerer, hacker? Terrific stealth mode startup in search of people willing to be open, curious, and solve complex problems.  The DV engineer can tackle the test & testbench development for both digital and mixed signal ASICs, but who is also versatile enough to help reuse the simulation frameworks they create in emulation and potentially in the chip bring-up itself.

Basic Qualifications
•  Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
•  Demonstrated accomplishment in digital VLSI verification, developing both testbenches and testcases using industry-standard verification methodologies and tools (SystemVerilog, UVM, constrained randoms, coverage metric extraction, etc.).
•  A sufficient understanding of contemporary digital design to debug and analyze simulation failures, and to work closely with the design team in resolving issues.
•  4-5 years of relevant industry experience is expected.

The Technical Product Development Engineer is a primary engineering resource for the development of enhancements and improvements to AVITA’s current technology and new platforms.

Education and Experience

OCM (Oxygen Concentration Module) Engineer – Irvine, CA

Senior or Principal level Mechanical Engineer (OCM) that supports the development of an oxygen concentrator module and assists in the integration into a current respiratory humidifier. This role shall design, develop, assemble, and test all things that pertain to this new device.  The OCM Engineer shall be the subject matter expert on oxygen generation/concentration, and the technologies that surround it. They shall have the knowledge base pertaining to the compatible materials, cycle times, component selection, sieve materials, and basic electro-mechanical knowledge to support the development of such a device.
