Discussing the impact of AI on companies, geopolitics, and diplomatic decision-making in the US, Europe, and Austria.

The Austrian Consulate General Los Angeles in cooperation with Advantage Austria Los Angeles and California Lutheran University present TechDiplomacy Talks. Key technologies, such as AI, quantum, neuro, nano, bio and 6G technologies, and the process of digitalization, are becoming increasingly important due to their transformative - but also disruptive - effect on businesses, foreign and geopolitics, and diplomatic decision-making. In order to do justice to this new geopolitical environment and to find appropriate responses to these new challenges in close cooperation with the USA, EU, and its member states, increased attention will be paid to building the capacities of a more strategically positioned tech diplomacy at the BMEIA. Building on the traditional focus of Austrian foreign policy, Austrian tech diplomacy also contributes to shaping an order for the digital space that is based on international law and, in particular, human rights. Digital humanism offers a good compass for dealing with the great potential and risks of new technologies.

Presented by: Austrian Consulate General Los Angeles, Advantage Austria Los Angeles, and California Lutheran University

Unraveling the Evolution of Wi-Fi:
A Journey from 1 to 7

On November 7, Chris Hansen gave a talk to the IEEE Buenaventura Communications Society Chapter. WiFi standards have had a profound impact on how we connect and communicate in the digital age. They have transformed our daily lives, enabling us to access information, connect our devices, and engage with online services seamlessly. As WiFi standards continue to evolve, we can anticipate even faster, more reliable, and secure wireless networking experiences in the future.

Wi-Fi 7, the latest version of the ubiquitous wireless networking technology based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, is now coming to market.  This talk describes the steps that Wi-Fi has taken to get where it is today.  It includes history of the standards, regulations, integrated circuits and features that make fast, short range wireless networks possible. (Video, Slides)

What You Should Know About Work:
For the soon-to-be employed, newly employed, or the employed but confused

On November 8, Karl Geiger gave a talk to the IEEE Buenaventura Computer Society Chapter. New entrants to the workforce may find the work place confusing, especially when entering directly from school after finishing a degree. The motivations and reasoning behind management decisions can seem unclear and confusing because professional training focuses on particular technical skills instead of business, economics, and "soft skills" such as workplace politics. This talk gives the soon-to-be employed, the newly employed, or the already-employed-but-confused a leg up.

Hear why and how companies make decisions that affect their employees and business, what sort of companies and managers exist and what they expect, and how to maximize your skills and treat yourself as a "business of one." The presentation concludes with resources useful for adopting a "business mindset" to let you become more capable, well-rounded, and valuable to your bosses and yourself. (Video, Slides)

IEEE Buenaventura Section Mixer + Lunar Robotic Village

The IEEE Buenaventura Fall Mixer was held at Hub101 on November 9, 2023. The event was attended by 62 IEEE and community members. Dinner was served by Stonefire Grill courtesy of IEEE. Momin Quddus, Buenaventura Section Chair, emceed the event. He presented a brief introduction to IEEE and a report on the state of IEEE and of Buenaventura Section.

IEEE Buenaventura Section awarded three scholarships of $1000 each to outstanding engineering students from local colleges. The recipients of the scholarships were Tara Pai (Moorpark College), Jaycee Alipio (Moorpark College), and Nouh Sepulveda (Oxnard College). Dennis Horwitz, Scholarship Committee Chair, presented the scholarship awards.

The keynote speech was presented by Dr. Hoppy Price of Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL/NASA/CalTech) on Robotic Lunar Village. Dr. Price explained the technology, plan, and budgetary requirements for a future lunar village. The lecture was very well received by the audience, followed by a vibrant Q & A session.

At the end of the lecture, the attendees had the opportunity to socialize and mingle. (Report)

FIRST Lego League Robotics Tournament

On Sunday, November 12, a FIRST Lego League Qualifying Tournament was held in Thousand Oaks at La Reina High School. About 150 middle school students from 23 teams competed to go on to a regional tournament. FIRST inspires young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators. IEEE Buenaventura Section supported this event both financially and in providing volunteers.

Teams of students in FIRST Lego League Challenge engage in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering – building and programming a Lego robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. Teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem. (Report)
