Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn

Pizza and Networking: 6:30 PM
Presentation: 7:00 PM
Speaker: Trina Ray
Free admission. Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2017-08-aes

Abstract

The international Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched on October 15, 1997 and had a marathon 13-year 2-billion mile journey to the distant planet Saturn. The 23-foot tall, 14-foot wide, 6-ton spacecraft is the largest most sophisticated outer planet spacecraft ever built, and is in its thirteenth year of operation in orbit around the planet Saturn. Cassini-Huygens has been returning extraordinary data about the entire Saturn system: the spectacular rings; the numerous icy satellites with a variety of unique surface features; the giant planet itself; a huge magnetosphere teeming with particles that interact with the rings and moons; and the intriguing moon Titan, which is slightly larger than the planet Mercury, and whose hazy atmosphere is denser than that of Earth. This talk will be a quick overview of the Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn, with a summary of the top science returns of its first 13 years in orbit, but really focus on an exciting preview of the upcoming end of mission on September 15, 2017.

About the Speaker

Trina Ray is an astronomer at NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she started her career with a bang - working on the Voyager Neptune Encounter in August of 1989. A few years ago she accepted the position of Cassini Science Planning and Sequencing Team Deputy, the team that coordinates all the science and uplinks the final sequences to Cassini, and has focused on the exciting end of mission planning. Trina received her Bachelor's degree in Physics from CSUN and her master's degree in Astronomy from San Diego State University. Trina has received numerous awards, including a NASA medal for Exceptional Service, and she is an active public speaker for NASA, invited to give many talks around the nation.

Three M’s and Three F’s: Mathematics, Memory, Motion, FPGA’s, Functional Programming, & Frames

Pizza and Networking: 6:30 PM
Presentation: 7:00 PM
Speaker: Ray Duran
Free admission. No registration needed.

Abstract

These are exciting times with rapid development of silicon technologies, application of new mathematics and new programming paradigms all arising and converging. This discussion touches lightly on these important topics and shows how they are interconnected through the application of motion frames (video). There is something here for anyone interested in our brave new digital world, where it came from and where it is going.

About the Speaker

Ray Duran, Principal FPGA Design Engineer at Extron Electronics, has over 25 years of engineering experience in the area of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), developing applications for real-time environments such as video and military based systems. Ray graduated with a BSEE degree from California State University Fresno in 1988 and masters in engineering from UCLA in 2014, with emphasis on digital signal processing.

Call for Volunteers - IEEE Buenaventura Fall STEM Event

The IEEE Buenaventura fall STEM event will be on Saturday, October 7 at La Reina Middle School & High School in Thousand Oaks. If you were involved in last year’s Players of the Light event, you know what a wonderful experience it was for the students, parents, and volunteers. If you were not involved, here is some background:

•  63 middle school students attended 9 workshops covered infrared photography, virtual reality, 3D imaging, wearables (gloves and clothing), solar energy, snap together electronics modules, ultraviolet light, and motion sensors.

•  We had a maximum of 12 students per workshop, and at least two mentors per workshop. Each student was able to get plenty of attention.

•  Parents attended a separate program on careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

•  At the end of the day, each student workshop got to show what they learned in a “show and tell” in the auditorium.

•  La Reina graciously let us use their classrooms, auditorium/gym, and cafeteria. Each classroom is equipped with a desktop computer and projector, movable tables and chairs, and WiFi connectivity.

•  Lunch and materials are provided by IEEE.

•  Check out the 2016 photos and videos on our Facebook page.

If you are interested in volunteering for this year’s event, please contact Deron Johnson <stem2017@ieee.org>.
