Abstract

How do we preserve our own voice and freedom of decision when big data “reads us” and gives unsolicited advice? Does artificial Intelligence manipulate our power of decision? Furthermore, recent research showed that algorithms may have kept some human biases that were involuntarily embedded at time of programming? This Summer event will be Q&A between the audience and a panel of guest experts in artificial intelligence, sensing, imaging, internet search engines and algorithms. Together, we will explore how to live in a smart environment while staying alert of the boundaries between our privacy and our connectivity.

About the Panelists

Jason Isaacs, PhD is currently an assistant professor of Computer Science at California State University, Channel Islands. His research interests include multiagent control systems, UAV path planning, localization and mapping, and sensor networks.  Dt. Isaacs received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, CA and a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky. Upon graduation he spent the next six years working as a motion control development engineer for Lexmark International Incorporated His UCSB postdoctoral scholar in applied research was sponsored through the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies.

Sana Sarfraz, BE, MSc. is an Autonomous Driving Systems Engineer at Aptiv, previously known as Delphi, a global technology company in the space of autonomous driving. Sana has developed algorithms for path estimation over the last 4 years, and the 4 years prior, she developed avionic weather radar systems at  Rockwell Collins. She is an expert in modeling, simulation and analysis of complex electronic systems and seeks elegant methods to provide real-time information in the dynamic regime of autonomous transportation systems. Sana has a BE(Hons) from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and an MSc in Aerospace Engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

Don Thomas, BSEE, CISSP, CISA has 35 years of expertise in cyber security, building networks, gathering intelligence and architecting solutions to protect enterprises.   Mr. Thomas guided Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Mattel, Disney, EarthLink and Lockheed in architecting and implementing secure solutions for their enterprises. Mr. Thomas has a BS in Electrical Engineering from the California State University Northridge and Engineering Management certification from CalTech.  He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and a Certified Global Information Assurance Incident Handler (GIAC/GCIH).
