Pizza and Networking: 6:00 PM
Interactive Session: 6:30 PM
Thought Leader: Loi Nguyen
Meetings are free and open to the public. Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2019-02-ent

Abstract

The notion of Pivoting on Point is derived from the financial markets technical analysis field, however, we’ve asked our thought leader to share his perspective on the intersection of the business cycle and technological trends. In particular Dr. Nguyen will discuss the dynamics of his role as Co-founder and Vice President of Marketing, Networking, Communications & Multi-Markets of Inphi Corporation.

Thought Leader

Dr. Loi Nguyen twice received the Hughes Chairman Award for technical innovation that significantly contributes to the business success of HRL. He was also awarded the prestigious Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) Electron Devices Society Paul Rappaport Award for Best Paper in 1992 for his research on ultra-high-speed InP devices with a record cutoff frequency of 340 GHz. Dr. Nguyen holds seven U.S. patents and is an author of more than 50 scientific publications. He has served on technical committees of the IEEE International Electron Devices Meetings (IEDM), the IEEE Device Research Conference (DRC), and the IEEE International Solid State Devices Meetings (ISSDM). Dr. Nguyen holds B.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cornell and an M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson School of Business.

Speaker: Richard Gray
Meetings are free and open to the public. Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2019-02-cs

Abstract

Modern purpose built race cars utilize specialized computers to control engine functions.  This presentation looks at the requirements and design of Engine Control Units in general and specifically as installed in an Elan NP01 race car.  The process of dyno tuning the AEM brand ECU will be demonstrated, as well as sharing some on track road racing experiences.

About the Speaker

Richard Gray received a BS in Chemistry and Physics, and a MSEE in Quantum Electronics from UCLA.  He has engineered optical communication systems, and video special effects hardware. He has also worked as a real estate developer, building designer, and builder. He has engineered, constructed, and raced his own sports car. Currently he farms lemons. But most importantly, he plays at various extreme sports including sports car racing.

Imaging Other Worlds
6:30 PM

Speaker: Dimitri Mawet
Meetings are free and open to the public.

Abstract

The discovery of thousands of exoplanets over the past 20 years taught us that our solar system is just one example among a mind-boggling variety of world architectures. Most of these planetary systems were detected by indirect techniques, which have ushered in the field of exoplanetology. In this talk, Dr. Dmitri Mawet, who teaches astronomy at Caltech, will focus on direct, high-contrast imaging, and spectroscopy. Beyond taking striking pictures of other worlds, this technique has yielded the most detailed remote-sensing measurements of exoplanet atmospheres to date.

About the Speaker

Dr. Dimitri Mawet is an associate professor of astronomy at Caltech, and senior research scientist at JPL. His research focuses on extrasolar planetary systems, and optical/infrared instrumentation. He served as a staff astronomer and instrument scientist for the VLT at the European Southern Observatory. He invented the Vector Vortex Coronagraph, an instrument to image exoplanets, and authored about 400 scientific publications. Dimitri Mawet earned a Ph.D. in Sciences in 2006 from the University of Liège, was a Marie Curie fellow at the Paris-Meudon Observatory, and at the Institut of Astrophysique Spatiale in Orsay.

Location: TBD. See our section calendar for updates.

Percutaneous Implantable Devices for Chronic Heart Failure Patients

Dinner (optional): Available at 6:00 PM for $12, payable at the door.
Presentation (free): 7:00 PM
Speaker: Murtaza Mogri
Free admission to presentation. More info at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2019-02-emb

Abstract

As a leading cause of death and hospitalization, HF continues to affect millions of people worldwide. V- Wave Ltd. company is focused on developing percutaneous implantable devices for treating patients with chronic Heart Failure (HF). V-Wave’s vision is to help patients who remain with disabling symptoms or need hospitalization despite optimized medical treatment. V-Wave has developed a proprietary interatrial shunt intended to relieve symptoms, reduce hospitalization, increase exercise capacity and improve the overall quality of life.

About the Speaker

Dr. Murtaza Mogri is currently the director of business development and market access in V-wave. He completed his Ph.D. in Bioengineering in 2011 at Stanford University focusing on optogenetics and deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Karl Deisseroth's lab. He used light-activated ion channels to control neural circuits, specifically to elucidate the mechanism of DBS as a treatment for Pakrinson's Disease. This work was published in Science and resulted in Murtaza receiving the Sammy Kuo Award for the top neuroscience paper from Stanford in 2009. In his previous career, he was the Senior Product Manager in Medtronic, Data Science Fellow in S2DS, Director of Product Management in Stanson Health, and a Consultant with the Boston Consulting Group.

Dr. Murtaza graduated with Bachelor's degrees in Bioengineering/ Biotechnology and Math/Computer Science from UC San Diego, where his research focus was in bioinformatics and systems biology. After graduating in 2004, he worked at Nellcor/Tyco Healthcare developing a novel noninvasive medical device, as well as at the NIH doing neuroscience research. At Stanford, Murtaza completed several business and patent law courses, prepared and presented three medical device business plans, and founded a student group that brings together graduate students from across the Stanford campus around the topic of healthcare.
