The Science behind NASA Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs)

Reception and Networking: 6:30 PM
Presentation: 7:00 PM
Speaker: Giacomo Cerretti
Meetings are free and open to the public. No registration needed for this event.

Abstract
Available and direct usable power is a fundamental requisite for spacecraft and planetary probes. Many NASA missions intend to investigate some of the harshest, darkest, and coldest locations of our solar system and beyond, and in such conditions the only reliable technology to power the mission is represented by RTGs. They provide electrical power through the direct conversion into electricity of the heat generated by the decay of a radioactive material. The absolute lack of moving parts and the already proven reliability (e.g. the space missions Voyager I and II are powered by RTGs that are still providing power after more than 40 years) make RTGs a very trustful technology. In this talk, Dr. Giacomo Cerretti will give an overview on the history of the radioisotope power systems in NASA missions, also analyzing the main components and the architecture of the RTGs. Since the development and engineering of more performing materials is a fundamental step to achieve high conversion efficiencies, he will focus on the theory of thermoelectricity and on the optimization strategies used to maximize the performances of SoA thermoelectric materials for aerospace applications.

About the Speaker
Dr. Giacomo Cerretti
is currently an NPP fellow (NASA Postdoctoral Program) working at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. After receiving his BSc and MSc in mechanical engineering, he worked for two years at the European Laboratory for Non-linear Spectroscopy (LENS) in Florence (Italy) on the development of photosensitive liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) for nano-robotics applications. After that, he moved to Mainz (Germany) where he obtained a PhD in inorganic chemistry with a dissertation on metal oxides and ceramic materials for high temperature thermoelectrics. His current research at JPL focuses on the development of new and more performing thermoelectric materials to be used in the radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) for powering future deep space NASA missions.

5G and IoT or Internet of Threats

Gather and Pizza/Refreshments: 6:30 PM
Presentation: 7:00 PM
Speaker: Alan Way
Meetings are free and open to the public. Register at www.ieee-bv.org/meet/2019-08-edcas

Abstract
We are on the cusp of a new industrial revolution with the deployment of 5G networks around the world. Unlike the previous generations of cellular communication, 5G will also focus heavily on machine to machine communication. It is expected that by 2020 over thirty billion devices will be connected to the internet. Over the coming years using a combination of 5G and WiFi, these devices connected to the internet will continue to grow at an explosive rate. The security of these devices in many cases has been overlooked or not been taken as seriously as it should have been. We are at risk of exposing ourselves to massive network attacks, unless these security concerns are not addressed.

The presentation is a cautionary tale that recounts the largest IoT attack on the internet, costing millions of dollars around the world. We will look at how the attack was implemented, the tricks that it used and the people behind it. Only this year one of the last people involved (that we know of) was imprisoned in the U.K!

About the Speaker
Mr. Alan Way
is an industry veteran who began his career, helping to design, install and test many of the early X.25 based networks throughout Europe and the United States. Since that time he has lectured on many other IP based technologies, around the world including 1-5G, WiFi, Video, Positioning, Timing, SDN, NFV, IoT, Security, IMS, IPv6, IPSec and many other communication technologies. He also has a channel on YouTube, “alantalkstech” explaining many of these technologies with over 9,000 followers. Alan previously worked for Spirent Communications for 18 years as their International Business Development Manager, presenting technology seminars all over the world. Prior to that he worked for Nortel as their Business Development Director, looking after major international accounts such as BT and Bell Canada.

Originally from Guernsey in the Channel Islands where he studied computer science and telecommunications, he grew up surfing and boating. While working in Paris for two years he met his wife, and now has two children and two grandchildren.

Mentors Needed: IEEE Buenaventura Fall STEM Event for Girls

The IEEE Buenaventura Fall STEM Event will be on Saturday, October 19 at La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks. If you were involved in last year’s event, you know what a wonderful experience it was for the students, parents, and volunteers. If you were not involved, here is some background:

•  Almost 100 middle school girls attended 8 workshops covering Arduino programming, chemistry, electronics modules, robotics, solar energy, virtual reality, and wearables.
•  We had at least two mentors per workshop. Each student was able to get plenty of attention.
•  Parents attended a separate program that covered topics such as careers in STEM, how the young brain develops, and how technology can keep us secure.
•  At the end of the day, students got to show what they learned to their parents.
•  La Reina graciously let us use their classrooms and cafeteria. Each classroom is equipped with a computer projector, movable tables and chairs, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
•  Lunch and materials are provided by IEEE.
•  Photos of last year’s event are on our Facebook page.

If you are interested in volunteering for this year’s event, please contact us at <stem2019@ieee-bv.org>.

IEEE-USA Webinar: You Have Two Seconds (to Make a First Impression)
August 15, 11 AM PDT

You only get a couple of seconds to make a first impression. Many people know that first impressions are important during job interviews, but good first impressions are crucial in many business situations:

•  Meeting a prospective client
•  A sit-down meeting with a new manager
•  Networking with new colleagues
•  A first get-together with your new team

Listen to Susan de la Vergne as she follows up her IEEE-USA Insight article You Have Two Seconds and explains why a good first impression matters and how to make one.
